Why Do We Make New Year’s Resolutions In The ESL Classroom?

Everyone likes a second chance, so do our students.

At the beginning of the year, some students decide to study more while others hope to have more time to hang out with friends.

Some finally want to impress parents or teachers while others are only thinking about social networks!

Every time a new year rolls around, everyone sets out to better themselves.

They promise they will lose weight, work harder…

New Year's Resolutions In ESL

But what is it about the New Year that brings hope for such change?

Why do people make resolutions?

Is there a RESET BUTTON?

Of course not! But these activities are fun, fast & super easy to carry out throughout your ESL lesson.

So this is a fantastic opportunity to learn new vocabulary and exercise the FUTURE with WILL, for instance.

3 Templates For New Year’s Resolutions:

#1  This New Year Resolutions

A template to commit the student to do something he/she has wished to change in the past.

#2 2021

A template to fold and be creative. The teacher can then find four jars with the numbers (2-0-2-1) where students put their resolutions. Alternative: these resolutions are displayed in a bulletin board too.

#3  New Year’s Senses

A template to create five New Year’s Resolutions in ESL related to the Five Senses.

All these three activities can be read out aloud too.

They can be used to revise or introduce the Simple Future; assigned as homework; shared on-screen and/or simply be the starting point to develop speaking or writing skills.

And finally, remember these are all suggestions which I believe can be adapted to all levels and teaching situations: for teachers working in face-to-face classrooms where Covid-19 restrictions are in place or for teachers working from home.
