Today it’s all about acrostics in ESL but first I am going to tell you what happened during Valentine’s Day celebrations in my online English lessons.
Firstly, I carried out different activities from Valentine’s Day In ESL: 13 Easy Online Ways To Help.
Secondly, I assigned some of them; however, one included writing an ACROSTIC POEM with one of the words from this worksheet about St. Valentine’s Day.
Thirdly, and most importantly, I noticed that most of my students didn’t know what an ACROSTIC POEM was and how they should do it. Their coursebook provided a nice example with the word L-O-V-E, they read it, I explained and sent them the links of these videos through the Google Classroom to watch:
Therefore, I thought this post about acrostics in ESL and the templates could be useful for you and your students too!
An Acrostic In ESL? What is it?
It…
- is a cheerful poem anyone from any language level can write;
- doesn’t need to rhyme;
- can be long or short;
- can be about anything/any topic;
- has simple rules:
- the first letters of each vertical line spell out a word/phrase
2. these first letters are usually capitalized to make the word/phrase stand out
6 Things You Need To Do To Get Students Write Great Acrostics In ESL
#1 set the context and connect the ACROSTIC with the topic you are teaching
#2 decide what to write about
L-O-V-E // H-U-G // K-I-S-S…
Q-U-A-R-A-N-T-I-N-E // M-A-S-K…
C-L-O-T-H-E-S // F-O-O-T-W-E-A-R // A-C-C-E-S-S-O-R-I-E-S…
etc.
#3 brainstorm ideas and vocabulary about that topic
#4 choose a word/phrase
#5 write it vertically by placing the brainstormed ideas on the lines on which the letter(s) may appear
#6 promote students’ imagination
