Learning English vocabulary, new vocabulary, new words, even at these times of pandemic has never been so handy!
Whether you are at home working keeping social distancing or out there on the field, even though you cannot travel as much as you could right now, English words will always be your helping hand.
So are we on the same page?
When learning and teaching vocabulary we have to explore the things a learner needs to know about a word, however we don’t have to do everything by the book.
Firstly, I’ll try to show how by doing what I usually do with my students. We are all on the same boat, right? I’m not saying it’s the right thing to do, all I’m saying is that I get what I want… they end up retaining the words I initially intend. Sometimes they even learn some more!
What’s The Game Plan?
So the game plan is to learn and teach English vocabulary by combining all the strategies we know and by making use of the world around us. Variety may be the key but here I’m going to combine ways of learning which can break monotony and traditional vocabulary teaching methods.
Haven’t we all gone to a wonderful restaurant with an amazing view? And then even the toilets were astonishing? We take a picture of the outdoor view, so why don’t we take one of this peculiar superloo?
Let’s go the extra mile as our hands aren’t tied!
In a nutshell, for learners to effectively acquire new vocabulary, firstly they have to go through different stages. Moreover, it is fundamental that there are no strings attached and that we make use of each of these stages, raising the bar and not making the mistake of merely presenting new vocabulary. In conclusion, we should give the learners the chance to put these new words into context. That will be a safe bet, trust me!
Come along with me and think outside the box! That’s the game plan.
WORDS make a WORLD. OURS.
